چکیده

Flannigan, and Nick Erdman. Thanks to Richard specifically for offering endless assistance and support in spite of many difficulties I encountered along the way. Above all, I would like to thank Jerry Schnoor for his guidance throughout the course of my graduate studies. In addition, I would like to thank all the amazing professors that comprise the Environmental Engineering department and their infectious passion for this area of study that has led me down the path I've taken. To my family, in particular my grandma, for her unfailing support and dedication to weekly letter writing. Thank you without whom I would have never pursued a Master's degree. I am incredibly grateful to have spent the better part of the last five years with all of you. A special thanks to Eric for the many days we spent studying together over the years. Thanks to Meredith, whom I cannot thank enough for making the last semester of graduate school bearable despite the many long hours I spent in the lab/office. Thanks to Deacon for teaching me how to make an incredible pizza (I may not have eaten otherwise) and more importantly for being an inspiration to me as someone who truly loves their work. And to Drew for helping me to see the best in every day and for being a constant distraction from anything productive, which both allowed me to separate my life from my work.

Thermodynamics Study of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) Passing through SWNT and Their Removal from Environment

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) have been widely used to flame-retard products common in homes and theworkplace, and subsequently. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) typify a class of highly toxic, stable aromaticpollutants. PCBs are recently being scrutinized for potential environment damage in groundwater and in theatmosphere. The elimination of chemical pollutants from a contaminated environm...

Native Phytoremediation Potential of Urtica dioica for Removal of PCBs and Heavy Metals Can Be Improved by Genetic Manipulations Using Constitutive CaMV 35S Promoter

Although stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) has been shown to reduce HM (heavy metal) content in soil, its wider phytoremediation potential has been neglected. Urtica dioica was cultivated in soils contaminated with HMs or polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). After four months, up to 33% of the less chlorinated biphenyls and 8% of HMs (Zn, Pb, Cd) had been removed. Bacteria were isolated from the pla...

Cleaning Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB) Contaminated Garden Soil by Phytoremediation.

A poplar planted system resulted in the complete removal of at least 19 of the 29 potential polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners detected in trace amounts (37.9 ng g-1 in total) in a commercial garden soil, while the unplanted soil only had 2 congeners completely removed after 96 days. In addition, the most recalcitrant congener, PCB 52, only decreased by 0.1% in the unplanted reactors whil...

Biodegradation of Polychlorinated Biphenyls by and Isolated from Contaminated Soil

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) cause many significant ecological problems because of their low degradability, high harmfulness, and solid bioaccumulation. Two bacterial strains were isolated from soil that had been polluted with electrical transformer liquid for more than 40 years. The isolates were distinguished as Lysinibacillus macrolides DSM54Tand Bacillus firmus NBRC1530...

Phytoremediation of soil contaminated with cadmium, copper and polychlorinated biphenyls.

A pot experiment and afield trial were conducted to study the remediation of an aged field soil contaminated with cadmium, copper and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) (7.67 +/- 0.51 mg kg(-1) Cd, 369 +/- 1 mg kg(-1) Cu in pot experiment; 8.46 +/- 0.31 mg kg(-1) Cd, 468 +/- 7 mg kg(-1) Cu, 323 +/- 12 microg kg(-1) PCBs for field experiment) under different cropping patterns. In the pot experimen...

Dechlorination of Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Real Waste Transformer Oil Using a Modified Household Microwave Oven in Presence of Sodium Hydroxide and Polyethylene Glycol

This research was carried out to assess the dechlorination and decomposition of Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the real waste transformer oil using polyethylene glycol 1000/NaOH through a modified household microwave oven. To do so, the influence of polyethylene glycol (PEG) (1.5-7.5 g) and NaOH (0.3-1.5 g) under microwave (MW) power of 500 W on the dechlorination efficiency of PCBs, exist...
